From June 23 to 27, Institute of Science Tokyo welcomed undergraduate ASPIRE League students from across Asia to its Ookayama Campus for the ASPIRE Undergraduate Engineering Design Challenge 2025, a five-day international workshop.
As part of the event’s cultural program, Mariko Anno, an Associate Professor in Science Tokyo’s Institute for Liberal Arts, gave a special lecture on June 24: “The Profound World of Noh Drama: Sounds of Knowledge.”
The talk presented a scholarly and engaging introduction to Noh theater, one of Japan’s oldest and most refined performing arts, and concluded with a live performance on the nohkan (Noh flute) by Professor Anno herself.
The session provided a substantive and intellectually immersive cultural experience, sparking active discussion and piquing the students’ interest.
Established in 2009 under the leadership of Tokyo Institute of Technology (now Science Tokyo), the ASPIRE League brings together five of the leading regional science and technology universities: the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, Tsinghua University in China, and Science Tokyo in Japan.
The ASPIRE League promotes innovation, scientific advancement, and global talent development through joint research and student exchange.
As a founding member, Science Tokyo remains deeply committed to strengthening collaboration within the ASPIRE League and expanding its global impact.
The Institute will continue to lead initiatives that foster academic excellence, cross-cultural understanding, and sustainable innovation across Asia and beyond.
